There are big differences and little differences between the
writing pieces of Malcom X and Franklin.
Malcom X comes from a rough background, as suggested in his
piece… he learned how to read in prison. I’m not sure how much more rough you
can get. His writing style suggests that he doesn’t care much about appearance
and how he puts himself out there. He just wants people to know his story.
Franklins writing comes off as more dignified, like he has a
story to tell but fills it with somewhat boring details and there was not
anything in his piece that really pulled me in.
Both of the stories were easy to relate to because of their
theme… learning something. Learning how to read and write, which both men
succeeded at. Their confidence was low at the beginning, but by the end of each
of the stories both men had ultimately achieved their goals. They both had
motivation; which is an important part of learning and getting anything done.
In each of the stories then men had to learn for themselves,
and I think that’s an invaluable lesson. Once you learn for yourself that you
CAN find the motivation, that you can get things done on your own, you can go
places, and you can change your life for the better.
Good observations on the two essays, both their specific differences and their unified stance that education can change your life!
