Waiting for Superman Thoughts

Waiting for Superman
*Don’t LET your kids feel like they’re bound to be failures… you have to cut people breaks. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, sometimes people are not exactly how and what you want them to be.
*I feel strongly that most teens/young people in prison come from hard times; and that it can be the schools influence, but mostly parents.
*Kids have goals, we need to push them towards those goals… a good parent believes that their child can do anything.
*No Child Left Behind – a good idea, but slightly flawed.
***As a teacher I would make sure that all my students felt comfortable talking with me about anything, and asking me questions if they were having trouble with anything.***
*Should be simple, but it’s not – schools in different states get different amounts of money. They have mixed agendas. Things that should make schools work better, actually makes things worse.
*A parent shouldn’t have to think “why bother?” when sending their child to school… it’s not fair, and that is stupid.
*”Once you get tenure we are stuck with you for life!”
*Teachers unions give their support and their money more often than not to Democratic Parties. Position that they’ve taken is that “all teachers are created equally” one is not worse than the other. I find that to be totally bogus.
*Can’t reward good teachers based on the union contract.
*Teachers are great, teachers unions are not. They’re the biggest failures.
*”The Lemon Dance,” where they get rid of and trade bad teachers - Milwaukee. In New York it’s called “The Turkey Trot.”
*Private schools can be better, but they cost more money… most of the families in bad school situations can’t afford it. However, some of the parents say that it’s worth it.
*”Many injustices are occurring for students (kids) because of the need for “harmony” between adults.” –Michelle Rhee
*1960’s Magnet Schools, difficult to get into. Charter Schools – many children apply for.
*Up until the 1970’s education was the best in America. Never an ordeal, but an important experience in our lives. America ranks 25th in math in the world… WOW. Kids in America don’t believe that they aren’t very good.
*Assume if you pay a lot for your mortgage that you’re going to have a great school and excel. Heck to the no.
*Tracking is often used after standardized testing, schools and kids in the middle often have the most difficult time succeeding. They aren’t “dong the best” but they also aren’t failing, requiring no special attention.
*Low income kids are often not given a chance to be better; you have to be able to adapt your lessons so that the kids are able to learn easier.
*The kids understand that their education is important, inner city kids often get that they will need to try harder in order to be able to succeed in life.
*Unless you can bring positive results in the classroom then you shouldn’t be a teacher.
*”It all becomes about the adults.” –Michelle Rhee
*The whole lottery system is bogus, and not fair. Something needs to change.
